Four Bangladeshi women scientists featured in AASSA publication & the work that put them in Asia’s STEM spotlight

The Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) proudly celebrates the recognition of three of its Fellows—Dr. Aliya Naheed, Professor Dr. Kamrun Nahar and Professor Dr. Sharmin Sultana —in the recent AASSA publication, Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): Advancing SDGs in Asia.
Published by the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), the publication highlights outstanding women scientists across Asia whose research and leadership are contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dr. Aliya Naheed, Senior Scientist at icddr,b, was recognized for her contributions to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through her pioneering work in public health research, infectious disease surveillance, and diagnostic innovation. Dr. Sharmin Sultana Professor of Physics at Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka was featured for her achievements in physics and STEM education, while Professor Dr. Kamrun Nahar, Professor of Agricultural Botany at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka was recognized for her research on climate-resilient agriculture and crop adaptation to environmental stresses.
The publication also features Dr. Sabrina Elias Assistant Professor of Life Sciences at Independent University, Bangladesh, acknowledging her contributions to quality education and plant genomics research.
The inclusion of three BAS Fellows in this prestigious regional publication reflects the Academy’s commitment to promoting scientific excellence and highlights the significant contributions of Bangladeshi women scientists to addressing global challenges through research and innovation.
