Professor Shah M. Faruque was born in Jashore, Bangladesh on 11 November, 1956.

Prof Faruque obtained his B.Sc. honours (1978) and M.Sc. (1979) degrees in biochemistry from DhakaUniversity, and his Ph.D. degree in molecular biology from the University of Reading in England (1988).

Professor Faruque currently works in the School of Life Sciences at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB). Previously he was a Professor of Microbiology and Biotechnology in BRAC University. He worked in the department of biochemistry, Dhaka University as an Assistant professor, and then moved to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) as head of  Molecular Genetics. He later served as the director of the Centre for Food and Water Borne Diseases, and the director of the Genomics Centre at icddr,b.

He later conducted research to address health problems in developing countries involving waterborne and foodborne pathogens. He obtained further experience and training in related fields at Centres for Disease Control, USA (CDC), Harvard Medical School, and Osaka Prefecture University. Prof Faruque maintained an active research team in microbial genetics, ecology and epidemiology for over two decades, and have conducted cutting edge research in collaboration with world-renowned institutions and scientists in the field. He was awarded various research grants by prestigious institutions including the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), Harvard Medical School, USAID, Swedish International Development Agency, and the Wellcome Trust in UK.

Prof. Faruque began his research career at the University of Reading, and worked in hormonal regulation of gene expression.

He was awarded a commonwealth Scholarship for higher studies in the UK. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to research, he was awarded the TWAS Prize-2005 in Medical Sciences.

Prof. Faruque has authored more than 150 original research papers, reviews, and book chapters. As many as 15 of his papers have been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of USA (PNAS). He has also published in other top-ranking international journals including Nature, and Lancet. His research findings have been highlighted, and quoted in various scientific reviews, and in the news media.

He has edited a number of text books.

Prof. Faruque is an elected Fellow of TWAS, and holds membership of various professional committees.

Prof. Faruque visited various countries of the world in connection with his research, and works jointly with scientists from different countries and Institutes in India, Japan, Thailand, Sweden, and the USA. He has attended various conferences as an invited keynote speaker, and also worked as a visiting professor in Osaka Prefecture University, Japan.
