Professor Dr. Md. Shahdat Hossain was born on January 1, 1967 in a village in Tangail district. He secured 9th position in Dhaka Board Secondary School Certificate Examination (Agriculture Group) in 1981. After completing his college education at Dahanbary College, Tangail in 1983, he was admitted to the University of Dhaka where he completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. Degrees in Biochemistry. He then went to Shimane Medical University in Japan and received his doctorate in the Department of Physiology-I in 1999. His research focus was on the effects of docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6, omega-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5, omega-3), two highly polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish oil, on neurodegenerative changes in aging and rat models of Alzheimer's disease (AD), with particular emphasis on hyperlipidemia, hypertension, platelet aggregation and membrane fluidity of platelets, endothelial cells, and neurons. He has also accomplished several postdoctoral fellowships, including JSPS, JASSO, JSPS-invitational, NIH in Japan. In addition, he was invited as a visiting professor at the Department of Environmental Physiology, Shimane University Faculty of Medicine, in Izumo, Japan. He visited the USA, France, Italy, Switzerland, Thailand, Malayasia, Singapore and Japan.

He joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at its inception in 2001 at Jahangirnagar University. He was also chairman of this department. His tremendous hard work helped the newly formed department become one of the most promising departments in the university. He currently directs the Alternative Medicine and Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory at his university and leads numerous projects to ameliorate Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease in model rats, as well as the neurotoxic effects of heavy metals on memory-related brain proteins.

He has carried out numerous research projects funded by Bangladesh Medical Research Council, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education and Culture, University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) jointly sponsored by the World Bank and UGC. He has published more than 150 scientific peer-reviewed international and national papers, 5 book chapters and more than 50 abstracts, mainly at international conferences, achieving a Scopus CiteScore above 555 and ISI Impact Factor scores above 320. His research has been highlighted and cited in various academic reviews and in the news media.

Professor Hossain was honored with the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) Gold Medal and the World Academy of Science (TWAS) Award for Outstanding Research in Biological Sciences in 2007. He is the excutive editor of Jahangirnagar University Journal of Biological Sciences, and pays reviewer services for several international journals including Foods, Food & Functions, Journal of Functional Foods, Molecules, Biomedical Reports, Legume Science, Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine, Plants etc. in the areas of phytochemistry, free radical biology, toxicology, learning and memory, neurodegenerative Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

He is also a member of several professional associations, including the Graduate Biochemist Association, the Japanese Universities Alumni Society of Bangladesh, the JSPS Alumni Society of Bangladesh and the Biochemical Society of Bangladesh, and was once a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Pharmacological Society of Japan, Physiological Society of Japan and Nutritional Society of Japan. He is also the author of several Bengali novels including science-based social novels like Alo, Josna Jole Jolshiri, Dingmoro, Noiroti, Japani Dinratrir Golpo, Hajimemashoo, Backstage in the Cindrella Story, Who's that Woman, Tomake Ovibadon, Bulbuler Vut Dekha, etc.
