Born in Bangladesh, Azim Mallik received his primary and high school education from Teota Academy, obtained B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Botany) from Dhaka University, and Ph.D. (Heathland ecology) from Aberdeen University, UK. He conducted postdoctoral research at the Fire Science Centre, University of New Brunswick and Forest Ecology lab at the Canadian Forest Service, Newfoundland. The latter was supported by a prestigious NSERC (Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada) International Fellowship. Results of his research in Calluna heathland in Scotland and Kalmia ecology in Newfoundland published in Journal of Ecology, Forest Ecology and Management and Journal of Environmental Management earned him international reputation. Since 1989 he has been a Professor of Plant Ecology at Lakehead University, Department of Biology, and is currently serving as a chair of the Department.

His areas of research interest are Disturbance ecology, Allelopathy, Plant strategies in community coexistence and Succession. Professor Mallik also conducted sabbatical research at the Dynamic Altitude Ecology lab, Universite de Savoie, Chambery, France, Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Instituto di Biologia, Seconda Universita di Napoli, Caserta, Italy. He was an invited Distinguished Foreign Expert at the Guangxi Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yanshan, Guilin and Lecture Professor at the Peat and Mire Research Institute, Northeast Normal University, China.

He received the Grodzinski Award of International Allelopathy Society at its third International congress in Japan. Professor Mallik received the Distinguished Lakehead University. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in leading ecology and forestry journals. He co-edited two books on Allelopathy in Agriculture and Forestry, published 30 invited chapters in books and conference proceedings and presented numerous invited research seminars in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and North America.

Professor Mallik is the founding Vice-President, President and Editor of International Allelopathy Society. He has been an invited board member, past treasurer and currently advisor of INTECOL (International Association for Ecology). He is in the editorial board of Forests (MDPI), Eurasian Journal of Forest Research, International Journal of Forest Science, section editor of Plant and Soil and subject Matter Editor of Ecosphere. He frequently publishes in and regularly reviews for leading ecology and forestry journals such as Ecology, Journal of Ecology, Oecologia, Applied Ecology, Ecological Applications, PlosOne, Forest Ecology and Management, Canadian Journal of Forest Science etc.
