Professor Md. Anwar Hossain was born on 01 January 1958.


Professor Anwar obtained B.Sc (Hons) and M.Sc degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1981 and 1983, respectively from the University of Dhaka. He was awarded Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1991. He did his post-doctoral research work in industry Suntory Crop., Osaka, Japan and in academia UMDNJ, Robert-Wood Johnson Medical University, NJ, USA. Dr. Anwar served as a Visiting Professor, Department of Cultural Fisheries, Kochi University, Japan and Rhein-Waal University, Germany.


Dr. Anwar Hossain was a Professor Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Dhaka. He joined as a Lecturer in 1984, became Assistant Professor in 1991, and Associated Processor in 1995. He was a Scientist, Suntory Institute for Bioorganic Research, Suntory Co. Osaka, Japan 1999, a Research and Teaching Specialist II, Department of Molecular Genetics, Microbiology and Immunology, UMDNJ- RWJMS, New Jersey, USA 2004 and an outstanding scientist in the field of molecular microbial genetics, bioinformatics and vaccine development. He has already established himself as an eminent scientist at home and abroad.


He was awarded BAS-National Professor Dr M Innas Ali Memorial Gold Medal Award in 2017 and University Grants Commission (UGC) best researcher award in 2011.

Dr. Anwar and his team have been working in multifaceted research areas notably Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus and vaccine development; Antibiotics resistant mechanism and pollutions; Poultry diseases and route of transmission of pathogens; Arsenic microbiomes and bioremediations; mastitis microbiome and bioinformatics. Professor Anwar has been awarded research grants equivalent to 1.5 million US dollars by different funding agencies from home and abroad like World Bank, UGC, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology, The World Academy of Science, Bangladesh Academy of Science-United States Department of Agriculture etc.


He has established research collaborations with various national and international research groups likes World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reference laboratories APHIS, USA, Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory, Pirbright Institute, UK, University of Rhein-Waal, Germany and a number of nation-wide collaborations. As part of his passion for research, he has established two modern biotech research BSL-2 and a BSL-1 laboratories in the University of Dhaka and one advanced Genomic research laboratory in JUST. Dr. Hossain attained research excellence globally for his research innovation in Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine. In 2018, most effective trivalent vaccine against FMD had been invented and declared by his team at a press conference, organized by the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP), UGC authority.


Dr. Anwar is one of the most profile researchers on Genomics and bioinformatics with over 88 referred publications, 3 chapters in books, over 50 conference presentations, proceedings and abstracts in various countries of Asia, Europe and USA.


Dr. Anwar has been working as a member of the editorial board of different national and international high-index journals. Currently he is a member of editorial board of high-index journal Transboundary and Emerging Diseases by Wiley.


He acted couple of times as a Syndicate Member and Senate Member for five times of the University of Dhaka. He is member of Syndicate, Academic Council and Board of Advance Studies is different of public and private Universities of Bangladesh. He served as chairman of the department of Microbiology for two terms.


Since May 2017 he has been holding the post of the Vice Chancellor of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) where he has taken measures to establish the university as a research oriented dynamic institution. He has implemented an integrated academic calendar in JUST and organized the 3rd convocation of the university where a Nobel laureate scientist made the convocation speech.


Dr. Anwar served two consecutive terms as a member of the Board of Governor and a Council Member of Bangladesh Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR).


Professor Anwar has voluntary contributed to many organizations in various capacities such as Vice-President and the founder of Asian Food Safety and Security Association (AFSA), secretary- general and president of Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists (BSM); Executive member of Bangladesh Biosafety and Biosecurity Association (BBBA) etc.


He is an active member of many national and international professional organization like American Society of Microbiology (ASM), NY Academy of Science and The Society for Neuroscience, USA.


He is an expert member of National Task Force on National Biotechnology for Bangladesh chaired by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He contributed to the development of National Biotechnology Policy.
