  • Professor Emeritus Dr. A.K.M. Azharul Islam was born in Khordabalali, Bogra on 2 November 1946. His father is M. U. Ahmed and mother Ayesha Khatun.
    • Educational Qualification: 
  • He did Matriculation in 1961 (First Division -8th position, Shariakandi High School, Bogra), HSC in 1963 (First Division in merit list 5th without appearing in English one paper); Rajshahi Govt. College); B.Sc. in Physics in 1966 (First in first Class, R.U.); M.Sc. 1967 (First in first Class, R.U.), DIC (Imperial College of Science & Technology, London), Ph.D. 1972 from Imperial College of Science & Technology, of London University.
              Research Interests: 
  • Professor Islam's research interests include (i) Elementary particle physics during 1967-1978, (ii) Superconductivity, defects in solids, electrical structure of matter, (1978 to present) MAX phase and 2D MXenes. .
    • National and International Awards (= 16): 
  • Professor Islam has won 3 international and 13 national awards (medals awarded by the Honorable President, Prime Minister, UGC, Minister of Educ & University Gold Medals etc.).
  • 1968 At the M.Sc level (1967) in the then East Pakistan, he was the only student to receive the Pakistan President's National Award Gold Medal, a cash prize of $1,000 and the opportunity to travel throughout West Pakistan.
  • Bangladesh's first ISESCO Laureate (2001).
    • Named in the list of the world's best 2% science researchers: 
  • Professor Islam has been included in the list of the world's best 2% science researchers. This includes 14 teachers, including the Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University.

  • Professor Islam has served as a lecturer in Physics at Rajshahi University since January 1968. He became a professor in early 1984. In his 45-year teaching career, he held the following positions:

  • Reviewer of more than thirty international journals and several national journals
  • Chairman, Department of Physics.

    • Post-doctoral Fellow and Visiting Fellow: 
  • Professor Islam has been a post-doctoral fellow at Imperial College (London) and a Royal Society Fellowship at the J.J. Thomson Laboratory (Reading University, UK). He has conducted research.
  • He has also worked as a Visiting Scientist at: (i) University of Cambridge-short visit (U.K), (ii) Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Research, Bangalore (India), and (iii) ICTP (Italy) as Associate and later Senior Associate; (iv) Yamanashi University, Japan, under Joint UGC-Japan Research Project.
    • International Conferences and Seminars: 
    • Professor Islam has visited 28 countries so far and participated in 58 international conferences.
    • Organized two international workshops at Rajshahi University in 1996 and 1998 (with participation of scientists from 10 and 14 countries respectively including foreign scientists from USA, UK, Sweden, Germany, Singapore, Japan, China, Iraq, India, Pakistan etc).
    • Members and Fellows of Science Academies: Professor Islam is an elected Fellow of (i) The Institute of Physics (London) and (ii) Bangladesh Science Academy.
  • He is also a member/fellow of various professional organizations such as: (i) The New York Academy of Sciences, (ii) American Physical Society, (iii) AAAS (USA), (iv) Asian Physical Society, (v)  Bangladesh Physical Society
