Professor Dr. Gulshan Ara Latifa is a member of Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC) from September 2023 till to date and awarded a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) in 2022. She was a former Chairman, Dept. of Zoology, Dhaka University from 2006-2009 and become a professor from January, 1993. She worked as a Provost, Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib Hall, DU from 2009 to 2013; She took part in various activities such as Student Advisor, Department of Zoology, DU from 1987 to 2002 and in DU sports committee as a member. She was the President of Zoological Society of Bangladesh for two consecutive terms from 2017-2021 and the Vice-Chairman of National Oceanographic And Maritime Institute (NOAMI) and also editor of the journal. After retirement in 2012, she served the dept. of Zoology as Supernumerary and Honorary Professor from 2013 to 2019.
She was Professor and Academic Advisor, Dept. of Environmental Science, Stamford University Bangladesh from 2011-2023. She is an executive member of Bangladesh Association of Commonwealth Scholars And Fellows (BACSAF) till to date. Prof. Latifa is an advisor of the Journal of Worldwide Holistic Sustainable Development (JWHSD), Canada.
Professor Latifa did her B.Sc. (Hon’s) and M.Sc. (Fisheries) in Zoology in1969 and 1972 respectively from the University of Dhaka. She joined the department of Zoology as a lecturer in November 25, 1973. She was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue her PhD degree at the University of Manchester. She obtained her PhD degree in Zoology from the University of Manchester, UK in 1977. Her PhD research work was on “The effect of temperature on the development of Heterocypris incongruens (Ostracoda)”. Her postdoctoral research in Zoology, 1984 from Braunschweig Technical Institute, West Germany. She participated in many national and international academic training, seminars and symposia. As an expert in the selection committee of teachers in zoology and in different public and private universities.
She is a syndicate member of State University of Bangladesh and zoology expert in many public and private universities. She received an award for the best women scientist of the year in 1999 by National Environmental Science Academy, India. DFID gave her teaching award to develop course curricula in the field of Zoology & Fisheries.
She supervised many PhD, M.Sc. and B.Sc. students in the field of Zoology and Environmental Sciences.
Professor Latifa has rich research background in the field of Zoology and Environmental Sciences. She has over 110 research publications and also published three books on fisheries.
She was a Sub project manager of UGC funded HEQEP Project title “Faunal survey and enrichment of facilities for Biodiversity research Sub-Project (CP-2216)”, Department of Zoology, Dhaka University (April 2012 - December 2016). Under this project, DNA Barcoding Laboratory established at the department of Zoology, DU. She conducted several research projects in Zoology and Environmental Sciences such as:- PI, “Determination of Microplastics in Fish and Sediments of the Buriganga River”; Crustacean Specialist, Padma Bridge Museum under Padma multipurpose project from December 2015 to 2020; PD, Induced breeding of Channa punctatus and Channa stariatus under Bang. Agri. Res. Coun.; PD, Piscicidal property of Indigenous plants on some fishes under UNICEF; PD, Nutritional aspects and Parasites of Anabsas testudineus under Biotechnology research Center, University of Dhaka; PC, Aquaculture and Fisheries Project organized by joint collaboration of “ Fisheries and Marine Biology Department, Bergen University and Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka under NUFU programme”; PD, Piscicidal effects of leucanea leucocephala on fishes for fisheries management under UGC; PD, Artificial propagation of Mystus tengra, Mystus vittatus under the Ministry of Science and technology, Research Division. She is expert on Fish and shellfish Taxonomy & Biology, Aquaculture, Ecology Fisheries resources and Management, Fish Nutrition, processing and plant Toxicology, Environmental Science, Biodiversity and Conservation etc.
