Dr Abu Tweb Abu Ahmed, a former Professor of the Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka is a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS). Dr. Ahmed is a former student (BSc Hons, 1966; MSc, 1967), a teacher (Assistant Professor 1975-80, Associate Professor 1980-1986 and Professor 1986-2018 until retirement after 50 years (1968-2018) of university teaching) and Chairman (5 January 1988 to January 1991). He also served the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) as a trainee/Lecturer (1968-1973) and Assistant Professor (1973-1975) in the Faculty of Fisheries.
Dr. Ahmed obtained his Doctorate degree from the University of Tokyo (1972) in Fisheries under IDA Fellowship. He has postdoctoral Research experiences in the University of Hawaii (1982-83) and Tokyo (1973, 1998). He initiated his research in early 1969 mainly on parasitic diseases of fish in the University of Tokyo and in 1970 he published his initial work in the famous Fish Pathology journal. He has some good works published in UK, USA and Japanese journals. From 1973 onwards Dr. Ahmed extended his research works on different aspects of fish biology, taxonomy, diseases, aquaculture and fish processing and handling. Many of his original research papers were published in recognized journals and proceedings.
Dr Ahmed had collaborative research works with Dr. Whitely (Canada) and his team on genomics of zebra fish which was published in Molecular Ecology journal His study on environment pollution involved the microbial accumulation in tannery effluents. Dr. Ahmed conducted a very difficult study in the hilly areas of Bangladeh on the Fisheries Potentials under Grants for Advanced Research in Science, Ministry of Education, GoB. A part of the study has been published in a very high ranking US journal, Zootaxa (Sl 169). He has also written books on molluscan fauna of Bangladesh.
Professor Ahmed is an internationally known eminent fisheries zoologist and he has published 214 materials in the form of scientific papers, books, booklets and technical reports on subjects of fisheries, aquaculture, environment pollution, biodiversity and malacology.
Dr Ahmed has long work experiences (1982-2020) in the mega projects of FAO, UNPD, IUCN, DFID, USAID, CIDA, WB, ADB and of different ministries as consultants/advisors. He has also produced a number of Technical Reports on environmental impact assessment (EIA).
Prof. Ahmed is a member of different scientific organizations like World Aquaculture Society, Asian Fisheries Society, Japanese Society of Fish Pathology, Zoological Society, Fisheries Society and Asiatic Society of Bangladesh etc. He also worked as editor in many journals and Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh.
Professor Ahmed is now the Chairman of Animal Experimentation Ethical Committee (AEEC) of the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR, B). He is involved in various Philanthropic works as a Vice President of Dhaka Ahsania Mission. He is also member of BoT & Syndicate of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST).
