Professor Dr. Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed obtained BSc Honors degree in Geology from the University of Dhaka in 1982 (exam of 1980). He obtained MSc degree in Geology from University of Dhaka in 1985 (exam of 1981). Professor Ahmed was conferred the degree of PhD in Hydrogeology by the University of London, United Kingdom in 1994.
Professor Ahmed is currently the senior most Professor (Grade 1) at the Department of Geology, University of Dhaka. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Geology from July 2016 to June 2019. He joined the Department of Geology as a Lecturer in October 1987 and was appointed as a Professor in December 2003. Before joining University of Dhaka, he worked as a Geologist at the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission from 1985 to 1987; and as a Junior Hydrogeologist at the Master Plan Organization in 1985. Professor Ahmed worked at the University College London, UK as a Commonwealth Staff Fellow for six months in 2007. He worked as a JSPS Invitation Fellow at the Osaka City University, Japan for two months in 2002. He also worked at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden under the Linneaus-Palme Fellowship on various occasions. He visited universities and institutions in the UK (Oxford University, Imperial College London, British Geological Survey); USA (Columbia University, Vanderbilt University, United States Geological Survey); Japan (Niigata University); Netherlands (Delft Technical University); Switzerland (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology) and India (Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur) in connection with joint/collaborative research projects.
He is a Life Member of the Bangladesh Geological Society (BGS); Geological Society of India (GSI); International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH); International Society of Groundwater for Sustainable Development (ISGSD); and Association of Global Groundwater Scientists (AGGS). He served in the Executive Committees of the BGS, ISGSD and AGGS. He is an Overseas Fellow of the Geological Society of London, the oldest Geological Society in the World. Professor Ahmed was a member of the World Health Organization’s Expert Committee on Groundwater Quality. He also served as a Member of the Inter-ministerial Committee on Deep Aquifer of the Local Government Ministry of the Government of Bangladesh. He was also a Member of the Groundwater Taskforce of the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of Bangladesh. He served as the Member of the High Level Committee on Managed Aquifer Research (HLC-MAR) and Technical Committee on Managed Aquifer Recharge (TC-MAR) formed by the SDG Coordinator of the Prime Minister’s Office, Government of Bangladesh. He also worked/works as Advisor/Consultant for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNICEF, IOM, UNHCR, JICA, DFID, etc.
He has been involved in many research projects in collaboration with national and international institutions from home and abroad in various fields of groundwater. The major areas of his research included microbiological contaminations from onsite sanitations; arsenic contaminations in groundwater of Bangladesh; impacts of urbanization on groundwater; impacts and mitigation of groundwater salinity in coastal areas of Bangladesh; managed aquifer recharge; sustainable development and management of groundwater resources; etc. So Far, he supervised numerous students for BS and MS thesis including two MPhil and six PhD researches from home and abroad. He is one of the authors of the international guidelines for Assessing the Risk to Groundwater from On-site Sanitation (ARGOSS) published by the World Health Organization.
He has authored/co-authored more than 250 publications in international and national peer reviewed scientific journals and more than 30 book chapters published by reputed publishers from different parts of the world. The number of citations publications are more than 18,000 (Google Scholar). He has been included in the list of Top 2% Scientists Worldwide 2023 by Stanford University. He has been ranked as the Number 1 Scientist at Dhaka University and Number 4 Scientist in Bangladesh by the AD Scientific Index 2024. He is ranked as the Best Earth Science Scientists in Bangladesh according to Research.Com. He has organized and contributed to many international conferences in all six continents of the world. He has delivered keynote/invited speeches in major international conferences on water, environment, geosciences and related issues.
Professor Ahmed is currently the Editor of the Dhaka University Journal of Earth and Environmental Sciences. He also served as the Guest Editor for the journal Applied Geochemistry. He also served as the Associate Editor of the Hydrogeology Journal. He was also Member of the Editorial Board of the Bangladesh Journal of Geology. He was the Chief editor of the book "Geosciences for Society and Sustainable Development of Bangladesh" published on the occasion of Centenary of University of Dhaka. He served twice as the General Secretary of the Dhaka University Geology Alumni Association (DUGAA).
Prof. Ahmed was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship in 1990; JSPS Invitation Fellowship in 2002, Commonwealth Staff Fellowship in 2007. He was awarded Dean’s Award by the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of University of Dhaka in 2019.
