The 14th Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) - First Security Islami Bank (FSIB) PLC National Science Olympiad 2024 was held successfully this year at both the divisional and the national levels under the sponsorship of the FSIB PLC. The Science Olympiad 2024 at the divisional level was held on Saturday, 17 February 2024 at 28 centers throughout the country including 5 centers in the metropolitan Dhaka. More than 6000 science students from school (class IX and X) and college levels (class XI and XII) participated in the Olympiad.
The 14th Science Olympiad 2024 at the national level was held on Saturday, 09 March 2024 at the Curzon Hall Premises, Dhaka University. The event started at 9:00 am with the National Anthem and hoisting of National, BAS and FSIB PLC flags. Pigeons, balloons and festoons were released by the Fellows and guests during inauguration. Emeritus Prof. Dr. M Shamsher Ali, Convener; Prof. Dr. Haseena Khan, Secretary; Prof. Dr. Yearul Kabir, Fellow, BAS; Dr. MA Mazed, former Director, BAS and Mr. Tahurul Haque, SEVP, FSIB PLC spoke in the inauguration, encouraged and inspired the students to study science for the development of the country and to build a smart Bangladesh. The National Science Olympiad 2024 examination started in the Curzon Hall at 10:00 am and continued for one and a half hour.
After the examination, the invigilators evaluated the answer sheets under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Yearul Kabir. An open discussion session for questions by the participating students started after lunch. There was a scientist panel consisting of 5 members on different subjects. They were Emeritus Prof. Dr. M Shamsher Ali, Convener of the Science Olympiad; Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Alim; Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Bin Hasan Susan; Prof. Dr. Mamun Al Mahtab, Fellows of BAS and Prof. Dr. Md. Mamun Molla, Associate Fellow, BAS. The panelists received several interesting questions and answered them. The session was very lively and the students enjoyed it very much.
The Prize Distribution Ceremony for the front-runners of the National Science Olympiad 2024 began at 3:30 pm. Barrister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, MP, Hon'ble Minister, Ministry of Education, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh had consented to be present as the Chief Guest, but due to sudden illness, he was not able to attend the event. Mr. Md. Mustafa Khair, Acting Managing Director, FSIB PLC was present as the Special Guest. The ceremony was chaired by Emeritus Prof. Dr. AK Azad Chowdhury, President, BAS. The Convener of the Olympiad Emeritus Prof. Dr. M Shamsher Ali and Secretary, BAS Prof. Dr. Haseena Khan delivered the welcome speech and vote of thanks respectively. The special guest Mr. Md. Mustafa Khair, Acting Managing Director, FSIB PLC then addressed the occasion mentioning the importance of science in making smart Bangladesh. The chairperson, Emeritus Prof. AK Azad Chowdhury addressed the event stating the versatility of different branches of sciences including artificial intelligence (AI), genome editing, robotics etc. and their application in sustainable development. Then Prof. Dr. Yearul Kabir, Associate Secretary, BAS declared the names of the successful students during Prize Distribution Ceremony. The Special Guest and BAS Fellows distributed prize money, medals, certificates, and science books to the champions of the School and College Group of the Olympiad. About 430 students participated in the National Science Olympiad 2024. Certificates of participation were presented to the all participants. The whole event was covered by Nexus Television, Bonik Barta and Financial Express, who were the media partners.
