Biography

B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees in Statistics from Dhaka University in 1956 and 1957, respectively, and a second M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 1967 and 1969, respectively, from the University of Toronto, Canada, and joined the Ball State University in 1969. His area of specialization is Mathematical Statistics.
Dr. Ali received the 1992 - 1993 Outstanding Faculty Award and the 1985 Outstanding Researcher Award from Ball State University. In 1990, the Bangladesh Statistical Association awarded him the first Qazi Motahar Husain Gold Medal. He was also awarded the Meritorious Service Awards in 1987, 1997, and 2002 by the Midwest Biopharmaceutical Statistics Workshop, which is co-sponsored by the American Statistical Association, for his role as a co-founder, program co-chair and local arrangements chair. On October 24, 2002, Frank O'Bannon, Governor of the State of Indiana, USA awarded Dr. Ali the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, the State of Indiana’s highest award, in recognition of Dr. Ali's contributions to Ball State University, to the statistics profession and, especially to the higher education in the State of Indiana for over three decades. In 2005, Dr. Ali received the Our Pride Award of the Bangladesh American Federation Incorporated for his contributions in the field of Statistics. In 2005, the Islamic Society of Statistical Sciences (ISOSS) awarded Dr. Ali the ISOSS Gold Medal for his contributions in the field of statistics.
In 1957, Dr. Ali worked briefly for the Socio-Economic Survey Board of the University of Dhaka. He then served in various statistical positions with the Government of Pakistan from 1958 to 1966. In 1969 he joined Ball State University as an Assistant Professor and in 1974 and 1978, he was promoted to the ranks of Associate and Full Professor, respectively. Dr. Ali was named George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Statistics in 2000 for his exemplary contributions in the field of Statistics and to Ball State University.
Professor Ali is the author/co-author of close to 200 articles on finite sampling, order statistics, and statistical inference. He also published over 200 article and book reviews in leading statistical journals.
Professor Ali has also presented over 120 invited and contributed papers at national and international professional meetings and Universities in the U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Holland, Egypt, Sweden, France, Italy, Korea, Japan, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Portugal and Australia. Professor Ali has been a Visiting Professor at Universities in USA, Canada, Bangladesh, Japan, India, and Korea.
Dr. Ali is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association; Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, England; Fellow of the Institute of Statisticians, England; and Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. He is also an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute, Member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Life Member of Bangladesh Statistical Society and Islamic Countries Society of Statistical Sciences.
