| B. Sc. (Hons.) degree in Botany from Calcutta University in 1926 and M. Sc. degree in 1928. He was awarded a State Scholarship from the Government of the then British India and studied at King's College, London from 1929 - 1932. He received his Ph. D. degree in Botany (Cytology) from London University in 1932. |
| Dr. Hedayetullah joined Calcutta University Science College as a Senior Lecturer in Botany in 1933. But soon left to join the post of Economic Botanist, Government of the then Bengal and served there from 1935 - 1944. He became the Founder Principal of Agriculture College, Dhaka, 1944 - 1949. He was Director of Agriculture, Government of East Pakistan, 1949 - 1956. He also served as a Liaison Officer, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Pakistan, 1956 - 1958. He retired from the government services in 1958. He was appointed Head of the Natural Products Research Division of the then Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Laboratories, Dhaka and continued in that position from 1958 - 1964. |
| He was a Founding Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences when the Academy was established in 1973 by the Fellows of the erstwhile Pakistan Academy of Sciences from the region of Bangladesh after independence of the country in 1971. |
