Did his Matriculation and I.Sc. from Calcutta University and Dhaka University, respectively. Secured B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Dhaka in 1952 and 1953, respectively. Obtained Ph. D. in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield, U. K. in 1960.

Professor Ahmed was selected for Academic Staff Fellowship which he enjoyed in U.K. at the University of Exeter in 1974 - 1975. He visited U.S.A. in the Summer of 1963 for participation in the Summer Science Institute of 1963 at the University of North Carolina. He participated at a conference on Chemical Bonding at Tufts University, U.S.A. in 1963 and attended an International Conference on Coordination Chemistry in London in 1959. Professor Ahmed visited U.S.A. in February-March, 1990, on an International Vistor Programme :"University Administratioin in the United States" and visited several Universities and Colleges there. In addition to the programme, Professor Ahmed also visited the Department of Chemistry in the Universities of Wien State, Chicago and Texas A & M and discussed with the Professors on researches of mutual interest. He participated in almost all the important national conferences.
He has over 70 publications in the national and international journals of Chemistry.

Professor Ahmed was elected a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 1978. He is a Life member of Bangladesh Chemical Society and a member of Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also an Ex-member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Member of Bangladesh Association of Scientists and Scientific Professions.
